JOB DESCRIPTION

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, MIDDLE SCHOOL (6-8)

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

Under direction of the principal, assist in the administration of a middle level school facility; plan, develop, organize, coordinate, and supervise the student attendance, behavior management, and extra-curricular activity programs; assist in the planning, development, and implementation of site, instructional, and operational goals and objectives, and in the evaluation of the effectiveness of educational programs and personnel performance; perform other related functions as directed.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist the principal in the evaluation and supervision of all regular and substitute certificated personnel and classified personnel assigned to his/her supervision
2. Assist certificated staff in developing competencies for good teaching.
3. Assist in the development of performance objectives relating to expected standards of student academic achievement
4. Assist in counseling students as to their responsibilities; and supports the teaching staff in the conduct of discipline on campus
5. Assist the principal in interpreting the educational program to parents, students and other staff members
6. Scheduling students into appropriate courses
7. Exercising leadership in community activities (i.e. PTA) as they affect the school
8. Participating in staff and student activities as needed
9. In the absence of the principal, assume roles and responsibilities of the principal
10. Assist in the planning, development, organization, coordination, and supervision of instructional programs and activities, which includes curriculum development, program and activity development, and design and delivery processes, and in the development of implementation strategies.
11. Perform need assessments, feasibility planning, and a variety of other research and development functions and activities as assigned.
12. Advise, counsel, and assist instructional, support, and ancillary personnel in problem solving activities pertaining to student behavior management, shaping, and control programs, and in the determination of alternative problem solutions.
13. Review, inspect, audit, and evaluate student attendance processes and procedures, and as necessary recommend revisions to the process to ensure an effective and efficient operational mode.
14. Assist in the planning, organization, and development of a master program schedule and calendar.
15. May register, design a program, and develop individual student instructional schedules.
16. May perform a variety of guidance related activities, including educational and social counseling and the conduct of standard and criterion referenced placement aptitude tests.
17. Plan, organize, and coordinate the campus supervision, activity, and control programs.
18. May assist in the planning, organization, and coordination of an instructional support program, including pupil services, instructional materials development, storage, and retrieval systems, and a variety of other related activities.
19. Assist in the planning, organization, and conduct of a comprehensive student body activity program, including co-curricular activities, budget planning, and expenditure control, and student government functions and activities.
20. Serve as a liaison to safety and youth service agencies in resolving student management and control problems, and student attendance and welfare problems.
21. Assist in the site budget planning and expenditure control process
22. Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Of:
Professional specialization in principles and practices of California education school management, thorough knowledge of curriculum and instruction, budget practices, supervisory techniques, facility management and regulation, policies and procedures related education; a broad working knowledge of organizational management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs, policies, and operational needs; working knowledge of the principles and practices of school budget preparation and administration; knowledge of the principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation; pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations; and District organization, operations, policies, and objects; and well-developed human relations skill sufficient to prepare and deliver presentations to large and diverse audiences, to motivate a multi-level team, and resolve confrontation through effective problem-solving strategies.

Ability To:
effectively interface with site and District personnel, parents, social and youth service agencies in resolving student problems and concerns; effectively participate in the planning and implementation of school guidance and curricular programs; communicate effectively in oral and written form; understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal accountability controls; plan and organize work; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action

Experience:
The ideal candidate will have at least two years of progressively responsible experience a school administrator or site-based leadership and at least four years of teaching experience, preferably at the middle school level. Experience as a principal is highly desirable.

Education:
A Master’s degree or higher degree in educational administration or closely related field is required.

Certificate Requirement:
Possession of a valid California Administrative Credential and teaching or service credential is required. A valid California Driver’s License is also required.

Working Conditions:
Environment: Office environment; constant interruptions; driving a vehicle to conduct work; evening or variable hours.
Physical Demands: Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; seeing to monitor students and to read a variety of materials; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching; walking to supervise events and activities.
Hazards: Contact with dissatisfied or potentially verbally or physically abusive individuals.
